INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Over the years the traditional methods of teaching have been between the Lecturer and the students in the class environment. This has constantly kept the educational system as a “Jug and Mug” relationship where the lecturer pours in the knowledge into the students. The advent of technology has brought information to the tip of the fingers of everyone that is capable of accessing it, this has brought about the development of different platforms that allow access to information that was once not accessible. We now have platforms that allow students and teachers to communicate in real-time. The project, Development of an Online Video Assisted E-Learning System for Introduction to Computer Science is targeted at analyzing and developing a system that will allow students that offer the course “Introduction to computer
Science”, to learn the fundamentals of the course using video-based resources uploaded to the core of the system.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Having analyzed the problem with the manual way of lecturing the aforementioned course: Introduction to computer science, the following problems have been highlighted:
- There is no video based platform for teaching the course in University of Cross River State, hence; the students may not clearly hear the lecturer owing to massive crowd of students that take the course per faculty
- The only reference materials students have is the notes given by the Lecturer
- Concepts that require in-depth explanation may not be covered within the time allotted for the course, hence the necessity of reference materials which most times are not readily available
- Available materials on the internet are not tailored specifically for the audience of the students of University of Cross River, a more general approach is used, without adequate consideration of the curriculum used in University of Cross River State.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of the study is to design and implement an Online Video Assisted E-Learning System for Introduction to Computer Science, with the following objectives:
- Create a database that stores video-based lessons for the course
- Create a System that allows students to login and watch these videos to increase their knowledge capacity of the course
- Upload video materials that will help explain clearly topics that require in-depth
explanation
- Provide statistics of the records in the database
1.4 Significance of the Study
This study is relevant and timely as it will be able to curb the following:
- Increase the knowledge base of students taking the course
- Increase the technical know-how of students who are taking the course, as this will make them closer to technology with consistent use of the system and internet facilities
- Provide a system where e-learning is practically applied in University of Cross
River State
- Give the Lecturer an opening to give an in-depth explanation n of topics that could not be covered within the time allotted for the class
- Help students re-visit topics that were understood owing to class overcrowding and other circumstances.
1.5 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research work is limited to all year one computer science students in University of Cross River State (Unicross) on introduction to computer science.
A study of this magnitude requires adequate attention and has met some obstacles some of which are:
- Finance to procure high-definition cameras to create high quality videos for the system
- Lack of huge Server Space to store videos
- Poor internet connection to upload videos to the database
1.6 Definition of Terms
- Database: A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically stored electronically in a computer system. A database is usually controlled by a database management system (DBMS). The data can then be easily accessed, managed, modified, updated, controlled, and organized.
- Online: Connected to a computer, served by, or available through a
telecommunications System, such as the Internet.
- Tutorials: A tutorial, in education, is a method of transferring knowledge and may be used as a part of a learning process. More interactive and specific than a book or
a lecture, a tutorial seeks to teach by example and supply the information to complete a certain task.
- System: a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole.
- Implementation: Implementation is the realization of an application, or execution of a plan, idea, model, design, specification, standard, algorithm, or policy
- Video-Based: Where it requires or includes the use of videos
- Telecommunications: Telecommunication is communication at a distance using electrical signals or electromagnetic waves.
Internet: A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.
